Utahns advised to check smoke alarms

SALT LAKE CITY – As Utahns change their clocks for daylight saving time Sunday, the Red Cross of Utah advises them to also check on their smoke alarms.

This year marks the third annual ‘Utah Turn and Test March Smoke Alarm Challenge,’ which urges Utahns to test their smoke alarms and replace batteries while adjusting clocks around their homes.

According to a release from the Red Cross of Utah, over 325,000 home fires occurred nationwide in 2024.

“One of the simplest and effective ways to protect your home and family is to have working smoke alarms,” Michael Smauldon, executive director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah Chapter, said.

The Smoke Alarm Challenge was established to raise awareness for fire safety, the Red Cross said, by reminding people to test their alarms’ functionality, make sure batteries are actively powering alarms, and ensure there is a smoke alarm installed on every level of the home.

“Working smoke alarms can mean the difference between escaping a home fire unharmed and facing tragedy,” Smauldon said. Smauldon also advised that smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.

The release said a report from the National Fire Protection Association said working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by about 60%, and the majority of home fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms.

“Smoke alarms are the first line of defense in a home fire,” Smauldon said. “This weekend, take a moment to test your smoke alarms to ensure they’re working properly and safeguarding your family.”
